Visualizing Big Data - a research perspective

Abstract:
The concept of Big Data relies on the everlasting competition between data collection and data processing power. As the amount of data points increases so does the dimensionality of each data point. Also desires to register and merge data from different sources before analysis arises. The talk will be concerned about Big Data in a research environment and different ways of analyzing and visualizing such data in order to aid meaningful interpretation.

Bjarne Kjær Ersbøll is Professor and head of the Statistics and Data Analysis section at the department of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science (DTU Compute). He also heads the cross-sectional consultancy unit: DTU Data Analysis which offers consultancy both internally at DTU and externally to the public and private sectors. In 1983 he received the M.Sc.(eng.) degree and in 1990 the Ph.D. degree, both from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). Bjarne Kjær Ersbøll’s work is mainly on applied statistics and image analysis. He has considerable experience in the application of these disciplines in industrial, medical and remote sensing projects. His research and teaching is largely inspired by finding solutions to actual problems in industry and other institutions - and often in collaboration with these. He teaches image analysis and statistics (especially multivariate statistics). He has supervised a very large number of master’s thesis projects and also Ph.D. thesis projects. Furthermore, he has organized or co-organized a large number of conferences on image analysis and statistics.
