Cotainr
DeiC has developed Cotainr, an innovative software tool that simplifies access to powerful supercomputing resources, especially LUMI, without requiring researchers to manage complex technical setups. Cotainr is designed for researchers working with AI, machine learning (ML), and data science in Python. The tool packages researchers’ Python environments and necessary libraries into a container, enabling computations to run directly on the HPC system without needing to install software on local machines.
This container-based setup allows researchers to easily transfer their existing Python environments to the LUMI supercomputer, regardless of whether they use tools like Conda or Pip. Cotainr eliminates the need for in-depth knowledge of Linux or command-line tools, simplifying the process so researchers can focus on their work instead of technical challenges.
The first version of Cotainr is tailored for Python applications in AI and ML, supporting tasks such as deep learning training and data analysis. Researchers can define their environment in a single file and then easily create and run it on LUMI's powerful GPUs.
Cotainr is part of DeiC’s broader vision to make supercomputing more accessible and user-friendly. The tool is open-source and freely available on GitHub, allowing everyone to benefit from its features and contribute to its further development. The goal is to expand Cotainr to support more HPC systems, enabling researchers to move their code and simulations between different systems with minimal effort.
Puhuri
Puhuri is a Nordic collaborative project aimed at managing resource allocation for LUMI. It is a three-year project that began in May 2022. The long-term goal is to integrate more European facilities into Puhuri, creating a unified European entry point for resource allocation across all European HPC systems.
Currently, efforts are focused on exploring how best to integrate Danish HPC systems with Puhuri.
