The aim of the M4M WS is to work practically on how to improve your metadata and make them machine-actionable, thus complying with the Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable (FAIR) principles. By doing this you will increase the impact of the research group's data, making more of your data discoverable and increase the number of your citable research outputs, while learning good data handling practices, which strengthens your data handling internally as well as within your peer group. Additionally, good data handling practices strongly increase your chances of receiving funding for your research.
DeiC finances and offers this WS to one research group consisting of 5 to 15 participants, selected based on suitability of data and engagement. During the workshop, the members of the research group will be working on one type of data of common interest to that group.
Why M4M?
It’s all about strengthening research groups and data stewards’ data management capabilities, specifically metadata handling and machine actionability.
The workshop is offered in English as a two half-day intensive M4M program, aiming to enable the research group to generate FAIR metadata for chosen datasets. At the end of the M4M WS, the group will have published at least one machine actionable metadata record, and more importantly will have developed a metadata template that speeds up the process of making FAIR metadata for future datasets.
The research group works with its own data, and – with a particular focus on the I (interoperable) principle of FAIR – identifies and applies possible domain specific ontologies and controlled vocabularies. Where none exist, the group will generate and publish its own. A highly practical hands-on approach offers participants a clear understanding of the technical path towards FAIR, without the need of diving deep into theory.
Prerequisites
Technical know-how requirements are basic - i.e. knowledge of own data and metadata, as well as basic computer skills and some spreadsheet experience. These are further elaborated in our Rules of Participation.
Some Preparatory Work is necessary - i.e. creation of accounts and familiarizing yourself with tools, preparation of your datasets as well as some reading.
Timeline:
- August: Submission of Expression of Interest
- Late-August: Binding commitment from the research group
- Early-September: Homework disseminated to the group
- Mid-September: 60 minutes pre-workshop meeting for the group, to ensure technical setup works
- Second half of September: M4M WS part I and II (2 X ½ days)
