DeiC unleashes AI

HPC infrastructure and expertise from the university sector are to be leveraged among Danish companies. That is the purpose of the EuroCC2 project, which on January 30th invited local companies to the inspiration seminar "Unleash AI".

7 local companies and organizations were gathered on Tuesday, January 30th at Bentax in Svenstrup near Aalborg to learn more about the opportunities AI holds for their business. The event was hosted by the EuroCC2 project.

EuroCC2: an HPC competence center for industry and administration

After an initial breakfast with networking opportunities, project manager Dennis Lange Wollbrink welcomed attendees with a brief introduction to the EuroCC2 project and its goal of promoting the use of HPC+ in Danish industry and public administration.

"Danish universities play a crucial role in developing new knowledge in the HPC+ area - including artificial intelligence. If we are to harness this knowledge as a driver for innovation, we need to be able to translate it into practical solutions. If we can tailor solutions that can increase sustainability and efficiency in Danish industry and public administration, then Denmark's overall competitiveness can be strengthened globally. As NCC Denmark in the EuroCC2 project, we would like to establish ourselves as a valuable link and partner in that process.” Dennis Lange Wollbrink, Project Manager in the EuroCC2 project.

The media are overflowing with news about artificial intelligence and its many possibilities, but what is AI really, and how does it work? Those were the questions addressed by keynote speaker, Associate Professor and AI specialist Andreas Møgelmose from AAU. He expertly introduced participants to the development history of AI and the basic principles of current AIs - including machine learning and the construction of language models such as ChatGPT.

Not a question of "if" but of "how"

So where should one start if they want to start using it in their company?

Andreas Møgelmose emphasized that AI will become an indispensable tool for companies working with information, and that both production and service companies should consider which processes can be advantageously performed, supported, or supplemented by AI. In addition to these considerations, a solid data foundation, on which AI can be trained, is the most important prerequisite for getting started with development.

Participants had the opportunity to discuss what specifically constitutes a good data foundation in the subsequent Q&A and debate session. Many good questions arose about the opportunities and limitations in the use of HPC - including questions about data privacy and business ethical aspects.

Finally, project manager Dennis Lange Wollbrink encouraged participants to use the resources of the EuroCC2 project to translate concrete ideas and data foundations into development and implementation. Afterward, participants were allowed to reflect on the day's key points over another cup of coffee, hopefully returning to their companies full of new insights and motivation.
