Universities and other institutions on the research network must - like everyone else - comply with the EU Data Protection Regulation, whose rules have been enforced since 25 May 2018.

For many educational institutions, the DPO task at the individual institution will not have a sufficient scope for it to be necessary to employ a separate DPO. Likewise, many educational institutions also do not have the necessary competencies to ensure compliance with the new data protection rules.

To help them with the task, in 2017 DeiC introduced the DPO service, which acts as an external data protection adviser and as a flexible resource for the educational institutions that may wish it. The service is linked to DKCERT.

The DPO service has continuously entered into agreements with a number of educational institutions, both for the management of the DPO function or more ad hoc assistance, and interest has been steadily increasing.

At the end of 2019, the service thus had agreements with eight different research and educational institutions. Here at the beginning of 2021, the number of agreements has more than doubled to 18.

Healthy growth

Part of the explanation is that Susanne Groth, who has previously been DPO for a number of maritime educational institutions, was employed by DeiC, and that some of these in this connection have chosen to switch to DKCERT’s DPO service.

In addition, there has been good organic growth, and at the time of writing the agreements include the following:

  • University of Roskilde
  • IT University of Copenhagen
  • Absalon University College
  • Royal Danish Academy
  • DMJX
  • Danish Decommissioning
  • The School of Architecture in Aarhus
  • The School of Design in Kolding
  • UCSYD
  • Study and Career Guidance Denmark
  • Marstal Navigation School
  • Svendborg Maritime School
  • Fredericia mechanical engineering school
  • Aarhus School of Marine and Technical Engineering
  • Martec
  • The Georg Stage training ship
  • The National Knowledge Centre for Free Schools
  • The Censor Presidencies at Censor-IT

In addition to the task of handling these functions, the service also operates a network for the educational institutions' DPOs.

4-5 meetings are held a year and all universities, vocational colleges participate in the network together with representatives from, among others, KADK, AARCH and the Designskolen.

Between meetings, the network continuously exchanges and shares information on the latest practices and interpretations in the implementation at the research and educational institutions.
